College programs that transcend boundaries

At Lehigh we call it fusion -- the power to customize your undergraduate learning experience by "fusing" together traditionally separate fields to create a program of study that is fresh, exciting and unique to your interests.

Following are some of the many opportunities offered at Lehigh that transcend departmental boundaries:

Arts & Engineering provides an opportunity to experience the breadth of an arts education and simultaneously follow the more focused curriculum of an engineering major. This five-year, dual-degree program results in two bachelor’s degrees, one from the College of Arts and Sciences and another from the College of Engineering and Applied Science. For more information, visit the Arts & Engineering web site

Bioengineering is based upon the impact of the full decoding of the human genome and nanotechnology. Students choose from one of three tracks: Biopharmaceutical engineering encompassing biochemistry and chemical engineering, Bioelectronics/biophotonics for students interested in electrical engineering, photonics and physics, and Cell and Tissue Engineering, which straddles the fields of molecular and cell biology, materials science, mechanical and electrical engineering. Students participate in research and internships co-advised by a faculty member and mentors from local hospitals and biotechnology firms. For more information, visit the Bioengineering web site

Computer Science & Business is unique to Lehigh and offers accredited degrees in both business and computer science. The highly integrated four-year program prepares students for the evolving role that technology and information systems plays in the corporate world. Approximately one third of the program is liberal arts based, one-third computer science, and one-third business. For more information, visit the Computer Science & Business web site

Environmental Engineering draws upon the strengths of our Civil Engineering program and our long standing major in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Earth and Environmental Science. The program offers integrated learning, undergraduate research, and summer internships. For more information, visit the Environmental Engineering web site

Integrated Business and Engineering is a four-year honors program that prepares a select group of students to assume leadership roles in industrial research and development, entrepreneurial initiatives, management consulting, high-tech ventures, and innovative technology. The program’s demanding curriculum leads to an accredited B.S. degree in business and engineering, with majors offered in all business fields and in most engineering disciplines.  For more information, visit the Integrated Business and Engineering web site

Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts and Sciences (IDEAS) is a new B.S. honors program that will begin admitting students in the Fall of 2007. IDEAS will give liberal-arts students a competitive edge by equipping them with the technical knowledge that is increasingly critical for success in law, education, medicine business and other career areas. For more information, visit Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts and Sciences web site

Integrated Product Development (IPD) is a program in which teams of engineering, business, and design students collaborate for up to a year to design, manufacture, and market new products for sponsoring companies like GM, B. Braun, and even NASA. Students have made more than 300 products in IPD’s 13-year history. In some instances, IPD teams received funding from Lehigh to form their own companies. IPD is unique among undergraduate programs nationwide and promotes technical entrepreneurship among Lehigh students. For more information, visit the Integrated Product Development web site

The Information and Systems Engineering Leadership Program (ISELP) is a unique program consisting of two main components: (1) an academic component in which you can enroll in the Information and Systems Engineering (B.S. I&SE) curriculum, and (2) a leadership-development component, in which you can engage in real-world problem solving and project leadership throughout your undergraduate years at Lehigh. For more information, visit the Information and Systems Engineering Leadership Program web site

Entrepreneurship: The ability of Lehigh to offer programs that span each of its four colleges creates an unusually diverse learning environment—one that serves as the foundation for all of Lehigh's entrepreneurial activities. Furthermore, its extensive supporting infrastructure integrates research, teaching and entrepreneurial practice across all fields of study and includes the entire Lehigh family—from the K-12 classroom to undergraduate and graduate programs; from executive education to training and mentoring for entrepreneurs throughout eastern Pennsylvania. For more information, visit the Entrepreneurship Initiative web site

Global Citizenship is a certificate program that attracts student of all majors and fields of study, including engineering and science, business, arts, humanities, and social sciences. Designed as a set of courses and experiences that any student can fit into her/his major – the Global Citizenship requires students to examine questions associated with the theme of "citizenship" within today’s "global" world. For more information, visit the Global Citizenship web site

South Mountain College is a residential academic program in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is designed to bring together a community of students and faculty dedicated to the exploration of intellectually exciting and practically significant topics of investigation. South Mountain students will work in a fluid, interactive, and experiential environment. They will be challenged to assume responsibility for their educations and make connections across disciplinary barriers.  For more information, visit the South Mountain College web site

Accelerated Pre-Health Professions

In addition, Lehigh also offers the following accelerated pre-health professions programs:
  • 7-year BA/MD program with Drexel University College of Medicine
  • 7-year BA/DMD program with University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine
  • 7-year BA/OD program with SUNY Optometry

Visit our accelerated pre-health professions web site for more information

Minors

At Lehigh, you also have plenty of opportunities to pursue a minor in areas outside your primary discipline to sharpen your skills, or broaden your expertise in a specialty through exposure to different disciplines or areas of research.  For instance, Lehigh undergraduates can pursue a minor in engineering to gain insight into how engineers think and work, or they can pursue a business minor that provides the knowledge and skills to make sound decisions in the business world.
