Q: What are the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) requirements?
A: The Admissions Committee recommends a TOEFL score of 230 or above for the computer-based test, 570 or above for the paper-based test, or 90 or above for the iBT (Internet based test). The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is also acceptable. A score of 7 or higher is preferred. Although we do not require students with an SAT Verbal score of 570 or higher to submit TOEFL test results, we STRONGLY recommend that all students whose first language is not English to take this exam.

Academically strong students whose TOEFL scores are in the 200 to 230 range for the computer-based test or the 540 to 570 range for the paper-based test may be considered for admission on a conditional basis depending on other test scores and intended major. Conditional admission entails successful completion of the seven week intensive English as a Second Language program (STEP/UP), which can be found at the STEP/UP home page.

Q: How can I send the results of my SAT and TOEFL examinations to Lehigh?
A: There are several ways to submit your test scores. You should indicate Lehigh as a recipient institution for your scores when you register for the exams. Our institutional code number is 2365.

Your secondary school guidance or college counselor may include the exam results on Part 3 of the Lehigh admissions application or the Common Application Secondary School Report Form.

Finally, your secondary school college/guidance counselor may send us attested or certified copies of the test results.

We strongly encourage you to ask your secondary school college/guidance counselor to send us the score results with their section of the application or include attested or certified copies of the test results.

Photocopies, faxed copies, and emails with test scores are not official and will not be made part of an applicants admission file.

You should also be consistent with the spelling and sequence of your family/surname and given names when registering for these standardized exams and completing the application. We recommend that on all application materials you provide your name as printed on your passport. Differences in the spelling or sequence of your names may delay the receipt of your test scores and the review of your application.

Q: Does Lehigh offer financial aid for international students?
A: We do offer financial aid to international students on a very limited basis. This means that the competition for financial aid is very keen.

In evaluating students for aid, we look at a combination of the students’ academic/extracurricular achievements and the student/family need for financial assistance. Therefore, our financial aid is a combination of merit and need-based aid. The amount of financial aid a student receives is determined on an individual basis and it is not possible to estimate a financial aid package until Lehigh has received the complete admissions and financial aid applications.

In order to apply for International Student Financial Aid, you must complete both of the following forms: the International Student Financial Aid Application and the International Student Certification of Finances. Students not wishing to apply for financial aid must submit the International Student Certification of Finances. The applications of international students will be considered incomplete until these forms are received by the Office of Admissions. Both forms can be downloaded from the following website: /admissions/uadmdownloadapp.asp
