Meredith Aach

imageMeredith Aach first became acquainted with Lehigh’s new Global Citizenship program when she attended Candidate’s Day in the Spring of ’04. Within a few weeks, she became part of the program’s first class of nearly 30 freshman students.

“Before I came to Lehigh, I had no idea what I wanted to do in the future,” says Aach, who is working toward a double major in international relations and anthropology. “But this program has already affected me. I’ve learned so much about globalization and I understand the concept of inter-connectedness so much more. It’s definitely increased my interest in other cultures.”

As part of a group that traveled to Chile over the Christmas break, Aach discovered a passion for travel and adventure, which the Global Citizenship program promises to support.

“That experience convinced me that I want to work internationally,” she says. “Listening to the struggles that so many have to endure has made me want to work in the area of human development. If it weren’t for this program, I’d probably still be undecided about my path for the future. This program has really made me feel that I’ve found myself.”

Part of that process of discovery is the realization that career fulfillment means much more than material success.

“Making tons of money and working for a huge corporation are not on my list of priorities for the future,” says Aach.

To anyone considering adding the Global Citizenship concentration to their course of study, Aach says: “Go for it! It really is an eye-opener to a world beyond our borders. The program can only help you expand your view of the world and your understanding of others. It can also put you on a path toward a lifetime of fulfilling work.”
