The MS in Health and Bio-Pharmaceutical Economics will require the successful completion of 30 credit hours. The following core courses (21 credit hours) will be required of all students:

Eco 402 Managerial Economics (3 credits)
Eco 412 Mathematical Economics (3 credits)
Eco 415 Econometrics (3 credits)
Eco 425 Cost-Benefit Analysis (3)
Eco 447 Economic Analysis of Market Competition (3 credits)
Eco 455 Health Economics (3 credits)
Eco 457 BioPharmaceutical Economics (3 credits)

In addition, nine credit hours of elective courses are required. These course are selected in consultation with and approved by the MS advisor and include a practical in a firm or organization relevant to the students career direction.

In order to provide exposure to pressing business issues in the health care and bio-pharmaceutical industries, one credit seminar style courses are offered during each academic year. Taught by industry executives, these courses provide exposure to current issues impacting the industry.

  • The Impact of the Hatch-Waxman Act on Patent Strategy of Pharmaceutical Firms
  • Characteristics of a successful bio-technology start-up firm
  • Ethics and decision-making in health care, clinical trials, drug pricing, etc.
  • The long-run economic impact of genomics and proteomics
  • Managing the life cycle of a drug from discovery to generic competition
  • Regulation, reimbursement, and malpractice issues in hospital management
