Our Ph.D. program emphasizes applied economics and the application of economic analysis to related disciplines. Recent doctoral students have written dissertations in standard economics fields such as labor, public finance, industrial organization, health economics, international trade, applied econometrics, and applied game theory. Others have used economics to analyze finance, marketing, and management of technology.

The success of our program is reflected in the placement of our graduates. Recent U.S. tenure-track academic appointments include the University of Iowa, James Madison University, St. Joseph’s University, The College of New Jersey, Illinois Wesleyan College, Moravian College, Muhlenberg College, Mount Saint Mary’s College, Lafayette College, Bentley College, Babson College, and the University of Southern Maine. Graduates have been placed also at the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank, AT&T, Air Products, and the Controller’s Office of the City of Philadelphia.

We succeed in placing our students in industry, colleges, and small universities because these students improve their abilities to analyze economic problems and acquire the maturity and communication skills necessary to succeed in these types of institutions. While the Ph.D. emphasizes research, teaching and the development of presentation skills are vital to Lehigh’s eminent undergraduate program.

The economics faculty is active in research. Collectively, we have recently published papers in journals including American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, RAND Journal of Economics, Economic Journal, International Economic Review, Journal of Econometrics, Economic Theory, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Economic History, Journal of International Money and Finance, Journal of Region Science, Economics Letters, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Public Choice, National Tax Journal, and Mathematical Social Sciences.

Economics faculty members have won numerous Lehigh University teaching awards.

We run a graduate student seminar series that includes invited speakers, advanced graduate students presenting their research, and workshops on presentation and teaching skills.

Between four and six students enter our Ph.D. program each year. At any given time there are approximately 10 students in residence. Classes are small and students are able to work closely with faculty. Students also have the opportunity to take classes in Lehigh’s other colleges. For example, the mathematics department offers a two course sequence in the mathematics of finance and the industrial and manufacturing engineering department teaches operations research, information systems, and artificial intelligence and neural networks. Lehigh University has active graduate programs with over two-thousand students in business and economics, education, engineering, humanities, physical sciences, and social sciences. Our 1,600 acre picturesque campus is close to the cultural and academic centers of New York city (90 miles) and Philadelphia (60 miles).
