He spent seven years as a Signal Corps officer in the Brazilian Army, including three years as an instructor at the Military Academy, where he taught Radio Equipment, Telephony, and Telecommunications Systems. During that time, he earned a second bachelor’s degree in Economics.
Dr. Vasconcellos resigned from active military duty in February 1979. He attended the State University of Rio de Janeiro and was awarded a M.S. in Business, with a Finance concentration, in January 1981. From June 1980 to August 1981, Professor Vasconcellos was a member of the faculty at the Institute of Accounting Studies of the Getulio Vargas Foundation. He arrived in the United States in August 1981 to attend the Ph.D. program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Professor Vasconcellos’ joint interests in Finance and Economics led him to pursue a course of studies combining both disciplines, earning a M.S. in Economics in May 1983 and a Ph.D. in Finance in January 1986. He came to Lehigh University in August 1988. At Lehigh, his teaching and research have been primarily in the area of International Finance. He has over forty publications to his credit, in topics such as portfolio approach to export diversification strategies, the foreign currency markets, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, and privatizations. The focus of his current interests is the interplay between financial development and economic growth. He has served as peer reviewer for many academic journals and was a founding Associate Editor of the Review of Pacific Basin Financial Markets and Policies. He was also a member of the Editorial Board of the Lehigh University Press.
Professor Vasconcellos has won both teaching and research awards at Lehigh. In 1990 he received the Kane Faculty Fellowship, a one year award. In 1994 he was awarded the Sue and Eugene Mercy, Jr. Professorship in Business and Economics, a two year award. In 1996, he was the recipient of the Beta Gamma Sigma Faculty Award. In 2000, Professor Vasconcellos was appointed the Arthur F. Searing Professor of Finance and Economics, a three year award.
