Graduate Degrees offered:
M.S., M.Eng. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering

Graduate students Civil Engineering conduct experiments across a breathtaking range of scales, developing smart systems while overseeing some of the world's largest structural fatigue tests.

Civil Engineering structural testing facilities at Lehigh are the largest in North America and enable research in earthquake engineering, fiber-reinforced composites, fatigue and fracture, development of smart structures, shipbuilding, and lifecycle engineering.

Graduate alumni teach in more than 60 universities worldwide, where some serve in top level university administration as presidents, provosts and rectors, and excel in private sector and government. Our faculty travel the world to give advice on earthquake-resistant structures, on arsenic-removal technologies in developing countries, and on flood and erosion control in Italy and Barbados. Students travel to give presentations at conferences, and to conduct field demonstrations of new technologies.

The department's ATLSS (Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems) Research Center houses the largest three-dimensional dynamic testing machines in North America, along with specialized earthquake-resistant testing facilities. The hydraulic and environmental labs also contain state-of-the-art facilities.

ATLSS researchers are conducting an $11-million study for the U.S. Navy into the design, fabrication and operation of ships whose double hulls are made of non-magnetic stainless steel and fiber-reinforced polymers. The project also involves researchers from the departments of Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, and Materials Science and Engineering.

Research thrusts of the Civil and Environmental Engineering department are directed toward creating new knowledge and exploring the envelopes of appropriate technology in the areas of civil infrastructure and environmental problems facing the society.

Sponsors of Research Projects

Civil Engineering research is sponsored by many government and private sources, including the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Navy, the Department of Energy, and the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Technology Alliance.
