Lehigh University’s
Environmental Engineering program provides a solid foundation in the causes, control, and prevention of environmental problems, while training students to use technology to address, and ultimately solve, these problems. The program offers a wide variety of courses, including chemistry, environmental science, chemical engineering, hydraulic engineering, pollution control and waste management, and geo-environmental engineering to give students the tools and the opportunity to pursue focused projects that have real impact.
The program prepares students for advanced study as well as for careers in fields such as environmental process engineering, environmental modeling, and hazardous waste management.
Students in the program take part in industry- or government-sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) projects, make presentations at national conferences, and work on design projects for industrial sponsors that solve real issues. In these projects, undergraduate students have helped make devices to remove toxic metals from water, investigated transport of bacteria in the presence of detergents, worked on sludge treatment at wastewater plants, prepared nanoscale iron particles, and analyzed samples and treated arsenic-contaminated water from the Indian subcontinent.
Environmental Engineering students are encouraged to work on projects with students from other disciplines through Lehigh’s Integrated Learning Experience (ILE) program, which encourages innovation and initiative while teaching teamwork, leadership, and communications skills.
The Environmental Engineering program draws upon the strength of Lehigh’s departments of
Chemistry,
Chemical Engineering, and
Earth and Environmental Science. Faculty that support the program work closely with students and are renowned worldwide, particularly for their expertise in soil and groundwater remediation.
