Research and Scholarship

Dr. Frangopol conducts research on topics chiefly related to infrastructure reliability, maintenance, management, and life-cycle performance. These include studies of the uncertainties associated with structures and infrastructures; structural safety and risk of engineering systems; damage assessment; structural health monitoring; structural optimization; bridge management systems; life-cycle cost assessment, design, and optimization of civil infrastructure systems; and decision making under uncertainty. This activity is wide-ranging, including both fundamental and applied research: theoretical studies, field investigations, testing, and contact with industry.  Dr. Frangopol is an experienced researcher and consultant to industry both nationally and aboard.  He has been Principal or co-Principal Investigator or served as a consultant in many major research projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the Federal Highway Administration, the Colorado, Florida, and Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, the Transportation Research Board, the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Applied Technology Council, the U.K. Highways Agency, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the Japan Ministry of Education. Also, he received research funding from the Tokyo Electric Power Company, the Japan Institute of Systems Research, the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, the Korean Ministry of Construction and Transportation, the U.S.-Spain Joint Committee for Scientific and Technological Cooperation, and the American Society of Civil Engineers, among others. He is the Founding Editor of Structure and Infrastructure Engineering (http://www.informaworld.com/sie) an international peer-reviewed journal, included in the Science Citation Index, dedicated to recent advances in maintenance, management, and life-cycle performance of a wide range of structures and infrastructures. He is also the Founding Editor of the Book Series Structures and Infrastructures, published by Taylor and Francis, London. Dr. Frangopol is the author or co-author of over 450 refereed publications, including books, book chapters, journal articles (more than 50 published in ASCE Journals), and papers in conference proceedings. Dr. Frangopol is also co-author, editor or co-editor of more than 20 books published by ASCE, Balkema, CIMNE, CRC Press, Elsevier, McGraw-Hill, Taylor & Francis, and Thomas Telford and editorial board member of several international journals. Additionally, he has chaired and organized several national and international structural engineering conferences and workshops. He is also the initiator and organizer of the Fazlur R. Khan Lecture Series at Lehigh University ( http://lehigh.edu/frkseries ).

Dr. Frangopol is the Founding President of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety  (IABMAS, http://www.iabmas.org/) and of the International Association for Life Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE,  http://www.ialcce.org/). He is also the Chair of the Executive Board of the International Association for Structural Safety and Reliability (IASSAR, http://www.civil.columbia.edu/iassar/ ) and the Vice-President of the International Society for Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructures (ISHMII, http://www.ishmii.org/ ). Dr. Frangopol is the recipient of several prestigious awards including the 2007 ASCE Ernest Howard Award, the 2006 IABSE OPAC Award, the 2006 ELSEVIER Munro Prize, the 2006 T. Y. Lin Medal, the 2005 ASCE Nathan M. Newmark Medal, the 2004 Kajima Research Award, the 2003 ASCE Moisseiff Award, the 2002 JSPS Fellowship Award for Research in Japan, the 2001 ASCE J. James R. Croes Medal, the 2001 Research Prize of the International Association for Structural Safety and Reliability (IASSAR), the 1998 and 2004 ASCE State-of-the-Art of Civil Engineering Award, and the 1996 Distinguished Probabilistic Methods Educator Award of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Among several awards he has received at the University of Colorado, Dr. Frangopol is the recipient of the 2004 Boulder Faculty Assembly Excellence in Research, Scholarly and Creative Work Award and the 1999 College of Engineering and Applied Science’s Research Award. Teaching

Dr. Frangopol teaches courses in Life-Cycle of Structural Systems, Structural Safety and Risk, and Structural Optimization. He has supervised over 70 Ph.D. and M.S. students.  Many of his former students are professors at major universities in the United States, Asia, Europe, and South America, and several are prominent in professional practice and research laboratories.
