Mission for Program
The CSE department’s mission for its Computer Science programs is to provide its students with a strong education in mathematics, science, and computer science fundamentals and to prepare them to be able to adapt to future changes in the practice of Computer Science.
Program Educational Objectives
1. Provide a strong foundation for further formal and informal study and for adaptation to future changes in Computer Science. Students will be able to: apply principles of programming, data structure, computer architecture, compiler design, and software engineering; design algorithms and analyze the complexity of these algorithms; apply the principles of the design of programming languages; apply the principles of operating systems.
2. Provide a firm base of science and mathematics. Students will be able to: apply the mathematics to problems in computer science; perform scientific experiments and to analyze the data from these experiments.
3. Provide exposure to projects that have the elements of those the students will encounter on the job. Students will: be fluent in at least one programming language; have experience in at least one additional programming language representing a distinct programming paradigm from their “first” language; be able to analyze substantial problems in terms of software solutions.
4. Educate the students in the moral and ethical issues that arise in computer science. Students will be able to: recognize the moral and ethical issues that arise in creating software and in using computing systems; make sound ethical and moral choices when creating software and in using computing systems.
5. Provide a flexible curriculum that enables students to tailor their programs to their individual needs. Students will be able to: choose elective courses in computer science and allied areas that promote their individual path to professional development; choose from a wide variety of courses in the humanities and social sciences.
6. Integrate the computer science and business components of the CSB program.
