CREG 257/258 Senior Design Project Catalog Description: CREG 257/258 provide a complete design experience for Computer Engineers over a two semester window. Research, planning, and completion of the initial design for a capstone project that integrates the many facets of the undergraduate Computer Engineering program. The project must involve the integration of hardware and software within a single system. Technical writing, product development, ethics and professional engineering, and presentation of design and research. Required or Elective: Required Credit Hours: CREG257 – 3 credits CREG258 – 2 credits Prerequisite: CSE257 and CSE258 are taken in-sequence during the Fall and Spring semesters of the senior academic year. Textbooks/required material: No textbook for this course. Course Objectives: At the completion of this course, students will be able t 1. Apply knowledge acquired in relevant science, math and engineering classes to a capstone design project integrating both hardware and software components. 2. Transform customer specifications to technical specifications for system design. 3. Design a system capable of meeting technical specifications subject to constraints associated with schedule, patentability, manufacturability, regulatory requirements, and ethical considerations 4. Use online databases for research 5. Understand the basics of intellectual property and perform a preliminary patent search 6. Work effectively in a team. 7. Employ relevant software tools for modeling, simulation, and design of circuit and PCBs, microcontroller and embedded computer programming, and hardware integration. 8. Use relevant software for project management. 9. Understand professional and ethical responsibilities in engineering. 10. Communicate effectively in written reports and oral presentations. 11. Understand the importance of continued learning, to include graduate school and professional certifications such as the FE exam and PE licensing Topics Covered: The CREG 257/258 senior design project encompasses two separate courses over a two semester period. In the fall semester, students enroll in CREG 257 (3 credits). There are two components to this course. The first is a weekly seminars series (2 hours/week), where students attend lectures on a variety of topics relating to the Computer Engineering profession. The seminars are presented by both Lehigh faculty and staff, as well as guest speakers from the private sector. Lecture topics include PCB design and manufacturing, manufacturability and parts, online resources for research, intellectual property, project management, entrepreneurship, ethics, regulatory requirements in design, graduate school, and professional certifications (FE/PE) . The second course component is 6 hours/week of hands-on laboratory time supervised by the team’s faculty advisor. During the laboratory hours, students focus on system design and implementation. CREG 258 (2 credits) continues the 6 hours/week laboratory component through the Spring semester. Both semesters culminate with an oral presentation and report reflecting the outcome of the students’ work. Class/Laboratory Schedule: CREG 257 seminars (2 hours/week), hands-on laboratory time (6 hours/week); CREG258 hands-on laboratory time (6 hours/week) Contribution of course to meeting professional component (Criterion 4): Relationship of course to ABET criteria: This course is highly supportive of ABET criteria. The supported items are 3a-3k.
