Pattern Recognition and Document Analysis
Prof. Henry Baird
An introduction to the state of the art of machine vision systems and
to the pattern recognition, image processing, and machine learning theory, algorithms, and systems architectures that underlie them. Daunting engineering challenges – trainable classification, segmentation, contextual analysis, adaptation, 'anytime' algorithms, etc -- will be illustrated with high-performance vision systems selected mainly from document image analysis applications. Students will carry out projects on cutting-edge research problems such as digital libraries and vision-based Turing tests to tell computers and humans apart (CAPTCHAs), and they will also present short talks in class critiquing articles from the current research literature.
