"Scalable Distributed Data Structures"

Tuesday, September 7, 4 PM

Packard Lab, Room 466

Abstract:  Scalable Distributed Data Structures (SDDSs) allows for highly dynamic and possibly very large files and databases, scaling out transparently for the applications over a large number of interconnected nodes (networks of workstations, grids, P2P…).  We have proposed the first SDDS, termed LH* a decade ago, several others have been introduced, and extensively studied since. They provide for hash, range or k-d partitioning, as well as for the high-availability in presence of failing data server nodes. We will overview some SDDSs, especially the highly available LH*RS scheme and the actual prototypes putting into practice these new capabilities for non-commercial use. Time permitting we will illustrate the talk with the demos.

Bio:  Witold Litwin is Professor of Computer Science at the University Paris 9 Dauphine.  He is also Director of Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches en Informatique Appliquee (CERIA) at U. Paris 9.  His research concerns multidatabase systems, data structures and scalable distributed data structures.  The multidatabase system design techniques and linear hash data structures he has proposed in 80s are well known, present in major database systems and popular applications.  Dr. Litwin has been an invited lecturer at several universities, including UC Berkeley in 1992-94, and Stanford University in 1990-91.  He was a visiting scientist at prominent US research centers, including U. of Maryland Science Center, Hewlett Packard Palo Alto Laboratories and IBM Almaden Research Center.  During 1980-89 Dr. Litwin was Research Director at Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique (INRIA, France).  Dr. Litwin wrote one hundred fifty research papers, edited or contributed to eleven books, and was Program Committee member of over fifty international database conferences.  He is an ACM Fellow 2002, and a member of IEEE.  The publication list of Dr. Litwin is available at http://ceria.dauphine.fr/witold.html.
