Lehigh Valley Partnership for STEM education in Grades 4-12 Teaching Fellowships

Lehigh University's Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) project is offering NSF-funded fellowships for graduate and undergraduate students interested in grades 4-12 (G4-12) education. Please refer to the Project Description for more information.

Graduate student fellowships consisting of full tuition waiver and a $27,500 twelve-month stipend are available to graduate students enrolled in Lehigh's Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Earth and Environmental Science, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and possibly other engineering or science degree programs. Undergraduate student fellowships of $10,000 per year are available in the same disciplines. Fellowships commence on June 1, 2003, and provide support each summer during June, July and August.

Teaching Fellows will work with Lehigh faculty, industrial partners and G4-12 teachers to provide in-class instruction for G4-12 students, formulate inquiry-based learning activities, design and run experiments, incorporate technology into classroom activities, and/or develop multimedia-based instructional modules.

Teaching Fellows will receive training by taking two courses in the College of Education at Lehigh University and by participating in summer workshops. Teaching Fellows will also participate in the standard orientation for new school district staff. This program includes participation on one or more outreach teams and monthly advisory board meetings. It is expected that Teaching Fellow candidates have professional goals for careers in industrial and post-secondary academic settings.

Teaching Fellowships are awarded for one year at a time. Fellows who perform well both as Teaching Fellows in the program and as students in their respective academic programs may be renewed for additional support. As of 2003, up to three years of support may be available. The principal investigators are committed to look for further support for this project after the third year of this grant.

NSF regulations stipulate that at the time of application, candidate Teaching Fellows must be citizens or permanent residents of The United States or native residents of U.S. possessions such as American Samoa. Foreign students who hold student visas are not eligible.
