The Solid Mechanics Laboratory is comprised of a photoelastic test bench, an Instron testing machine, and a small mechanical testing machine with out-of-plane moiré analysis capability. Two compact video cameras coupled with computers provide image analysis capabilities. The photoelastic test bench is used to deterime stress distribution in the sample.  The resulting photoelastic fringe patterns are analyzed digitally. In moiré experiments, the out-of-plane deformation of a shallow arch can be determined using computerized image analyses of the moiré fringe patterns.
