  • Eugenio Schuster, assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering & Mechanics is the recipient of a 2007 NSF CAREER Award for his work in nonlinear control of plasmas in nuclear fusion. Specifically, Schuster focuses on experimental validation of the control solutions at the most important fusion facilities in the U.S.
  • John W. Fisher , professor emeritus of Civil & Environmental Engineering, has been chosen to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for Education from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the world’s top professional civil engineering society. Professor Fisher will be honored on April 25 at ASCE’s annual gala in Washington, D.C.
  • Professor Dan M. Frangopol, holder of the Fazlur Rahman Khan Endowed Chair, is a founding member of the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE). Professor Frangopol is also currently organizing the IALCCE’s first annual Symposium on Life-Cycle Civil Engineering, set for June 2008.
  • The Engineering Advisory Board (EAB) -- the business and academic experts who provide strategic guidance to the engineering college -- has accepted two new members recently. The new members are Charles Davidson ’62, retired chairman, president, and chief executive officer of J.A. Jones, Inc, and Dr. Stephen Tang, group vice president and general manager of Life Science Olympus America’s Life Sciences division.
  • Recently, the engineering college has organized two events the represent its commitment to engaging middle-school students in science and engineering. In February, the college hosted PBS-39 and students and teachers from Broughal Middle School to help launch the PBS series Design Squad, a “reality show” for kids revolving around analytical thinking and technical problem-solving. On March 30, several dozen local middle-school girls visited campus to work with engineering faculty, staff, and students as part of the annual “CHOICES” one-day event. The college also organizes a weeklong CHOICES program over the summer.
  • Six students won prizes and seven more received honorable mentions during the Engineering Research Poster Competition in late February, organized by Professors Himanshu Jain and Wojtek Misiolek of Materials Science and Engineering. Although the college event is annual, this year it also serves as a qualifying round for the Lehigh University student research exposition that will help mark the inauguration of President Alice Gast.
  • Dr. Anthony G. Collins, President of Clarkson University, was presented the 2006 Lynn S. Beedle Award at the 71st annual Fritz Engineering Research Society (FERS) Banquet in early February. The award is named for Beedle, a former Lehigh faculty member and world renowned expert in structural engineering.
