“Faculty”
  • Aurélie C. Thiele, P.C. Rossin Assistant Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering, has been named a 2007 IBM Services Faculty Award recipient for her project in “Robust and Adaptive Services and Operations Management.” IBM announced 15 awards to recipients worldwide, including India, Germany, Hungary, China, United States, Netherlands and Uganda, for a variety of topic areas on Services Science, Management and Engineering.
  • Nenad Sarunac, associate director of Lehigh’s Energy Research Center, chaired a technical session, taught tutorials, and presented three papers at the 32nd International Technical Conference on Coal Utilization and Fuel Systems held recently in Clearwater, FL. Sarunac chaired a session on “Innovations in Existing Power Plants” and led tutorials on “Coal Beneficiation for Better Performance and Lower Emissions” and “Mercury Emissions.”
  • Richard Sause, the Joseph T. Stuart Professor of Structural Engineering in Civil & Environmental Engineering and director of The Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems (ATLSS) Center, was invited by the National Science Foundation to take part in a panel discussion on issues surrounding bridge reliability, focused on the recent collapse of the I-35 bridge in Minnesota. The event was co-sponsored by NSF, ASCE, and Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-30th District of Texas) on behalf of the Congressional Science and Technology Caucus. In attendance were Congressional representatives and staff members interested in hearing about how research can help in assessing, monitoring and improving aging built infrastructure, particularly bridges.
“Students”
  • Joseph W. Tedesco ’82P, earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from Lehigh after receiving his B.S. from the University of Notre Dame and M.S. from Tufts University, has been appointed Dean of the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston. This appointment becomes effective January 1, 2008. Tedesco is currently professor and chair of the University of Florida's Department of Civil & Coastal Engineering, a position he has held since 2000.
