Prof. Hartman, newly named interim ISE chair, is named young engineer of 2004 by PSPE

Joseph Hartman, the Soteria and George N. Kledaras Endowed Chair and Associate Professor of industrial and systems engineering (ISE), has been named interim chair of the ISE department.

Hartman succeeds S. David Wu, Iacocca Professor of industrial and systems engineering, who was named dean of the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science in December 2004.

Wu said Hartman would serve as ISE department chair until a permanent chair is named.

Hartman, who joined the faculty in 1996, was recently named 2004 Young Engineer of the Year by the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers (PSPE).

The award, which will be presented Feb. 25 at the Engineers' Week Banquet of the Lehigh Valley Engineering Council, covers Lehigh, Northampton, Monroe and Carbon counties.

Hartman, who has been a member of the Lehigh Valley chapter of PSPE since 2003, will represent the chapter later this year in the statewide PSPE Young Engineer of the Year competition.

Hartman conducts research in replacement analysis studies and is particularly interested in the impact of deterioration and technological change on companies' decisions to buy and sell assets. He also analyzes capital decisions from the standpoint of expected lifetime performance.

Hartman is editor-in-chief of the Engineering Economist, the premier journal in his area of research. In 2000, he received the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation and the Eugene L. Grant Best Paper Award from the American Society for Engineering Education.

In 2002, the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) named Hartman the Outstanding Young Industrial Engineer of the Year.

At Lehigh, Hartman has received the Frank Hook Assistant Professorship in recognition of outstanding scholarship and mentoring and the Alfred Nobel Robinson Award for outstanding performance in service and unusual promise of professional achievement.

Hartman holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in industrial engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a B.S. in general engineering, with honors, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

During academic year 2003-2004, Hartman served as a visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
