Patricia and Clifford R. Borland, Sr.  1959
Clifford R. Borland, a Pittsburgh, Pa. native, earned a bachelor’s degree in metallurgy and materials engineering in 1959. While a student, he was a member of the Chi Psi fraternity. Borland was the founder of Newport Steel in Kentucky and former chairman and CEO of its successor, NS Group Inc.

In 1989, Borland was named Outstanding Businessman of the Year by the University of Kentucky’s Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. He served as a director of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers and the American Society of Metals.

Borland was an active volunteer at Lehigh, serving on his class’s 35th Reunion Fund committee. He generously supported the Clifford R. Borland Scholarship and the Chi Psi fraternity programming at Lehigh.

Borland, who passed away in 2007, is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their three children and 14 grandchildren.
