Lee A. Butz graduated from Lehigh University in 1955 with a degree in civil engineering. Serving in the U.S. Army from 1955 until 1957, he trained with the 101st Airborne Division and was later stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky. His career in the construction industry began during his high school days in his father's general contracting firm, Alvin H. Butz, Inc. Since then, he has served the firm as a field superintendent, project manager, and in financial and marketing roles. In 1973, he became president of Alvin H. Butz, Inc. In November 1995, he assumed the role of chief executive officer after naming his son, Greg, president of the company.

Butz introduced the construction management concept to the Lehigh Valley in 1973. His firm is consistently ranked among the nation's largest 100 construction management firms, according to ENR, McGraw-Hill's construction industry weekly magazine. The company is currently managing projects covering a large spectrum including hospitals, college buildings, dams, commercial, industrial and municipal projects, and research facilities.

Butz’s support of Lehigh has funded numerous priorities including student scholarships, Zoellner Arts Center, and Linderman Library. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1995. He and his wife, Dolly, have three children, and live in Allentown, Pa.
