For the past few months, the best and brightest high school seniors have been making the difficult decision imageabout which college to attend in the fall. Among them are countless young minds that consider Lehigh University their top choice, yet know that the financial obligations of the Lehigh experience are too high. Thanks to the support of Lehigh alumni, the Challenge Scholarship program is providing those deserving seniors the opportunity to call Lehigh home.

The Challenge program is run through the Lehigh Fund. With a Challenge Scholarship, a gift is not invested, but goes directly to financial aid. This bridges the gap between the need for financial aid dollars and financial aid endowment income. A gift in the amount of $15,000 supports a full scholarship for one year, and a gift in the amount of $7,500 supports a scholarship for one semester.

Shelley and Max Stettner ’46 know the financial challenges that come with college, and hope that their support of the Challenge program will give upcoming students the same memorable opportunities that Max had while at Lehigh. “I started Lehigh the day after I graduated high school, in 1942. The tuition was $600, the price of the best Buick in town! But now times are different,” says Max. “I believe that anybody who has the ability or aptitude to be admitted to Lehigh and do the work should be able to get his or her education here.”

Contributing to the Challenge Scholarship program makes an immediate impact on a student’s life, and opens Lehigh’s doors to the best students, regardless of their economic background. Each gift to the University’s scholarship program is a ringing vote of confidence in the Lehigh tradition of providing quality education to the men and women who are our future.
