"I would not have been able to study at Lehigh if it were not for the generosity of the alumni."
- Alice Gonzalez Cavalcanti de Araujo '10
Dear Fellow Lehigh Parents,
As parents of college students, we are all too aware of the phenomenon of binge drinking on college campuses. The risks and effects of binge drinking are numerous and widespread. As you also know, Lehigh is not immune from this serious health problem.
Lehigh, however, has been fortunate to have been a recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant through the Harvard School of Public Health for the last five years to combat campus binge drinking. Lehigh has used the grant to fund a systemic approach, called Project Impact, to combat binge drinking through education, prevention, and enhanced social programming. The decrease in alcohol-related problems experienced by Lehigh students is very significant. The decrease in the second hand effects of binge drinking is even more dramatic. Project Impact has made Lehigh and our children safer and healthier.
Fortunately, Lehigh has been selected to receive a sixth year of funding for this important initiative and is using it for a successor program, A Matter of Degree (AMOD) Program for an Improved Social Atmosphere. The grant does not, however, cover all the costs associated with the program. AMOD needs additional funding of about $60,000 to meet the challenges and continue the impressive accomplishments in the struggle against binge drinking and its effects at Lehigh.
Please join us in making a contribution to Lehigh earmarked for AMOD. There are very few, if any, more important ways that we, as Lehigh parents, can contribute to the health and safety of our children.
Thank you for your interest and support.
Sincerely,
Jim and Michelle Duane
