CULTURAL, ECONOMIC, AND EDUCATIONAL
DEVELOPMENT
The University is a partner in improving the quality of life in the region. One example is the Community Fellows Program, a graduate-level experiential learning program designed to support regional agencies that are active in economic and community development.
Lehigh activities and events open to the public include sporting events, music and theater performances and exhibitions, and a wide range of seminars, lectures, and educational opportunities. As the largest university-based performing arts center in the Lehigh Valley, the Zoellner Arts Center attracts more than forty thousand people each year to arts and cultural events.
Lehigh’s Goodman Stadium, Rauch Field House, and surrounding athletic fields host football, soccer, track, and other sporting events—all with a breathtaking view of South Mountain. Stabler Arena, home of Lehigh’s basketball program, also brings to the region concerts, expos, ice shows, and an array of community activities.
EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT
Lehigh is committed to helping young people in Bethlehem to become educated and productive citizens. Lehigh shares its academic expertise with local school districts and reaches out to the children of the community through a variety of programs both on and off campus.
Bringing young people to campus are programs like the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Global Entrepreneurship, a summer residential program offered to high school sophomores and juniors featuring academic courses, entrepreneurial excursions, team projects, and a variety of interactive experiences.
The STAR Academies help elementary, middle, and high school children who are at risk of dropping out.
The ZeeK! Club exposes children to the performing arts at Zoellner Arts Center, and Lehigh’s Athletics Department sponsors programs for community outreach, such as sports camps for elementary and secondary students, community and family days at the Lehigh football games, and special Eagles training camp programs in the summer.
Lehigh’s Science Outreach Program takes students and faculty on the road to bring hands-on experiments into elementary classrooms.
Lehigh’s involvement and support of the Centennial School helps at-risk children who have severe emotional and behavioral challenges through intensive positive behavioral support. In addition, College of Education doctoral students provide consultation, assessment, and counseling services for children in a specialized pediatric school psychology program, in partnership with the Allentown School District, Lehigh Valley Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and the School District of Philadelphia.
The College of Education’s Leaders of Practice Lecture Series brings global experts to the Lehigh Valley to discuss critical issues facing public education, corporate training, and human potential. Speakers include Thomas Friedman, Gaston Caperton, and Sally Ride.
