Undergraduate Opportunities in Humanities
Visions of God: 2000 Years of Christian History and Art Primary research on the history of art and architecture, often limited by the difficulties of access and geographic dispersal of source material, is traditionally the domain of professional scholars. Thanks to the university’s commitment to undergraduate original inquiry, however, students in Visions of God have access to an enormous online database of images of Christian art up to the year 1400. The Index of Christian Art is the most comprehensive collection of images of Christian art in the world, with over 160,000 images. It not only allows students and scholars to search for images by subject, location, date, medium and artist, but also documents each work with the textual sources of its subject matter and bibliography. This enables students to go far beyond passive textbook understanding of the material to develop original and creative ways of analyzing one of the most significant aspects of Western culture. 15-25 students annually. |
