"Being involved allows you to take control of your experience at college and make it your own. You get out of college what you put into it, and that's true outside of the classroom."
- Jeff Abel

Diane Albright, a professional organizer who was featured on HGTV’s “Mission: Organization,” is convinced that a successful strategy for organizing a student’s room must have two features:
- plenty of vertical storage
- simplicity
“The space is just too limited to not make use of all the vertical space,” says Albright, who shares her expertise in a room she designed for Lehigh University. “It also has to be a simple enough organizational strategy that a busy student can maintain it. If it’s too complicated, the room won’t stay organized.”
Albright’s organizing ideas as illustrated in the Campus Square room below, along with products that could make the job easier:
Visual appeal doesn’t have to be sacrificed in a well-organized room. |
Vertical, stackable storage bins contain supplies. A nightstand next to the bed tidily contains necessities. |
A metal stand for the refrigerator provides extra storage space while raising the refrigerator to a more comfortable height. |
Cardboard organization boxes keep desk supplies handy, but out of sight. |
Acrylic containers with snap-on tops keep foods fresh, neatly contained and easily accessible. Above the desk, corkboard covered in fabrics that coordinate with the bedspread serve as appealing bulletin boards. |
A metal stand designed to raise the refrigerator is sturdy enough to support the appliance, and provides extra storage space for food items. |
Extra shelves installed in the closet help keep items of clothing from toppling over. |
Vertical shelving can neatly store everything from clothing to sports equipment. |
Metal French flower buckets do double duty as decorative accents and containers. |
A flexible rack that fits into a corner helps organize hats. |
Under the bed storage units maximize space. |
