While many of Lehigh’s great features brought Scott Wojciechowski ‘09 to South Mountain – the right distance from his hometown of Glassport, Pa., perfect-sized classes, high-quality programs, brilliant faculty and a vibrant student life – it wasn’t until he arrived on campus that the biology and secondary education major realized that he would not only earn a degree but build a meaningful life around it.

Wojciechowski, affectionately called “Scottie Wo” by those who know him, says that college, for him, “is a time to form the foundation for the future.”

In that respect, he says, “I’m not here singularly to go to class and learn content for my major, but to also learn about life, different cultures, and most importantly, about myself.”

Wojciechowski believes that the expansion of the college experience into extracurricular activities allows for the deeper exploration of self and that trying new things and finding what makes a person genuinely happy will partner with academics and lead to true success in life.

The energetic Class of 2009 President is also a member of the Office of Community Service staff, Association of Student Alumni (ASA), Gryphon Society, and Leadership Lehigh.

“My involvement in student life activities allows me to work one-on-one with groups of people, be it my classmates, faculty, prospective students, or children from the South Bethlehem Neighborhood Center,” says Wojciechowski.  “My various roles as servant leader in both class affairs and office programs prepare me for life lessons that cannot be taught from a textbook.  This hands-on experience will give me a leg up as I enter the real world upon graduation.”

Wojciechowski encourages students to get involved while at Lehigh.  “I believe there is a niche for everyone here,” he says.  “Common interests can be drawn from meeting friends with whom you share a class and/or activities outside of the classroom.  And here at Lehigh it’s very easy to get involved – clubs are looking for new members all the time – all that is needed is the initial step from the student to get involved.”

Having a chance at so many great leadership opportunities, he explains, also gives him a better chance to define himself and to continue to evolve as a well-rounded individual.

“Working in these different capacities allows me to learn to know when it is time to lead and when it is time to follow,” says Wojciechowski.  “I’m also growing academically, socially, psychologically and emotionally.”

In his short time here at Lehigh Wojciechowski says he has learned a lifetime of lessons:

“I have learned that my life is in my hands,” he says.  “I am in the driver’s seat.  My decisions influence my direction in life.  Try new things because you never know what you like or don’t like until you try it.  I am a part of something – I am a member of a huge Lehigh family that will share my greatest successes and support me in times of weakness. One person can make a difference.”
